Rotherham's clash with Ipswich off after Storm Babet causes flood
Rotherham's clash with Championship promotion chasers Ipswich on Friday was postponed after Storm Babet caused flooding near the stadium.
As Storm Babet batters parts of Britain, Rotherham cancelled the game just hours before kick-off when the River Don, which runs next to their New York Stadium, burst its banks following the torrential rain.
Although the pitch was unharmed by the flooding, the fixture was called off after discussions with the Safety Advisory Group and the English Football League.
"Rotherham United's Sky Bet Championship fixture against Ipswich Town has been postponed on the grounds of supporter safety following discussions with representatives from the Safety Advisory Group and the EFL which took place shortly after 4:30pm on Friday," a statement said.
"After the River Don burst its banks, the weather conditions and their subsequent effect on the surrounding area (were) a danger to supporters.
"This coupled with continued rainfall resulting in the flood waters rising and Don Street being closed to the public left the authorities with no choice but to postpone the game."
Second-placed Ipswich would have gone top of the Championship with a victory over second-bottom Rotherham.
The Tractors Boys are two points behind leaders Leicester, who travel to Swansea on Saturday.
