MLS, Mexico clubs to take part in new cup competition
Teams from Major League Soccer and Mexico's Liga MX will take part in a new cup competition aimed at strengthening club football in the region, it was announced Wednesday.
The new tournament -- the Leagues Cup -- would feature eight teams and take place between July and September.
"We are excited to take our partnership with Liga MX to the next level with Leagues Cup," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement.
"We have an intense rivalry between our national teams, and Leagues Cup provides a terrific opportunity to increase the growing rivalry between MLS and Liga MX clubs."
The inaugural competition, featuring four teams from MLS and four sides from Liga MX, will kick off on July 23 and 24.
Houston Dynamo will host Club America, Real Salt Lake face Tigres, Chicago Fire take on Cruz Azul and LA Galaxy play Club Tijuana.
All four MLS teams will play at home in what will be single-elimination knockout tournament.
