Highly-regarded Scottish coach Ian Cathro became manager in his own right for the first time on Monday taking over at Scottish Premiership side Hearts after leaving his post as Rafael Benitez' assistant at Newcastle.

The 30-year-old -- who never played as a professional but has forged a burgeoning reputation as a coach beginning with the Dundee United youth team before a spell as assistant coach at La Liga outfit Valencia -- signed a three-and-a-half year contract.

He replaces Robbie Neilson, who left for English League One -- the third tier -- outfit MK Dons last week.

"We are delighted to have secured the services of Ian Cathro and are confident he is the ideal candidate to take our club forward," club chairwoman Anne Budge told the Hearts website.

"He is widely regarded as one of the brightest young coaches in the game and has amassed a great deal of experience both at home and abroad.

"He may only be 30 years of age, but we are convinced that he has all the tools required to be a successful head coach."

Cathro's first challenge will come on Saturday when his third-placed side go to Rangers, who are one place above them.
