West Brom denied Championship top spot after Wigan draw

West Brom missed an opportunity to move back to the top of English football's second-tier Championship when they were held to a 1-1 draw away to lowly Wigan on Wednesday.

Wigan opened the scoring five minutes into the second half when Sam Morsy's long-range shot hit the woodwork and went in off the back of unfortunate Baggies goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

Michael Jacobs almost doubled Wigan's lead only for his free-kick to hit the crossbar before West Brom equalised on the hour mark when Charlie Austin scored from an indirect free-kick awarded for a back pass.

The draw saw West Brom go level on points with Leeds, who top the table on goal difference.

Elsewhere, Sheffield Wednesday remained outside the play-off places following a 1-1 draw with Derby.

Steven Fletcher fired the Owls into the lead but Derby equalised nine minutes from time when Chris Martin scored from a penalty awarded after Jack Marriott was brought down.

Sheffield Wednesday were reduced to 10 men in the closing seconds when Moses Odubajo was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Both Blackburn and Swansea had a man sent off in a 1-1 draw in south Wales.

Former Swans striker Danny Graham gave Rovers a fourth-minute lead, but the hosts equalised six minutes later through Andre Ayew's header.

The home side were reduced to 10 men when Tom Carroll collected a second booking for a foul on Lewis Travis, before Rovers' Bradley Dack also saw red for two bookable offences.

QPR moved up to 12th with a 2-0 win at Birmingham while Barnsley were left six points adrift of safety after a 1-1 draw with Reading.
